About The California Hotel
Built in 1929, the California Hotel is a historic landmark and a symbol of West Oakland’s rich cultural history. It was converted from a commercial hotel into affordable housing in the 1980s. The building was abandoned in 2007, and later foreclosed. Existing tenants won their fight to remain in the building. Today, the building provides 137 newly renovated, safe, healthy and affordable homes. In addition, improved community and commercial spaces have been designed to make services and amenities available to the neighborhood and the San Pablo Corridor.
