SPARC-it-Place Assistant

East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC) is seeking a temporary part-time SPARC-it-Place Assistant in Oakland, CA.


Schedule: 10 to 15 hours per week with evening and weekends hours; temporary assignment from June 2017 to December 2017



The SPARC-it-Place Assistant supports and assists with events, daily operations and maintenance of the SPARC-it-Place, a temporary, pop-up indoor and outdoor neighborhood marketplace along the San Pablo Avenue Corridor (SPC) in West Oakland.  The SPARC-it-Place was built in fulfillment of the San Pablo Area Revitalization Collaborative (SPARC)’s goals to support neighborhood vendors and businesses to creating a thriving main street atmosphere on the SPC.  The SPARC-it-Place will be open until the end of 2018, at which point in early 2019 EBALDC will begin development of a mixed-used affordable housing building.


The SPARC-it-Place Assistant will provide assistance with events management and execution, particularly for monthly marketplace events, support daily operations and site maintenance, and outreach, marketing, and social media. This position will report directly to the SPARC-it-Place Manager.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in ensuring proactive planning, communication and scheduling of a wide variety of events including monthly events,  programs, networking events, and special interest group meetings
  • Assist in the program content development for events
  • Assist with guest follow-up, including writing thank you cards and any follow-up communication as directed by the SPARC-it-Place Manager
  • Assist in set-up, tear-down, and help coordination of overall event execution
  • Assist in managing pre- and on-site registration for all events and programs
  • Work with the SPARC-it-Place Manager to plan and execute all marketing and outreach activities necessary to ensure successful events
  • Participate in the SPARC-it-Place Council planning  meetings including taking minutes and supporting the SPARC-it-Place Manager with meeting preparation
  • Build relationships with vendors including collecting pictures of vendors and their stories, develop content pieces and sharing through social media outlets to advertise about the market
  • Monitor the special events content on the SPARC-it-Place media sites and work in partnership with the SPARC-it-Place Manager and EBALDC Communications team to place SPARC-it-Place events on community calendars via newspaper, neighborhood social media accounts, and other venues.
  • After all events, complete data entry into appropriate Salesforce system for event attendance and collection of participant information


Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize in a changing environment and still meet deadlines
  • Dynamic self-starter who takes initiative, highly reliable
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; interpersonal and follow- up skills
  • Proactive problem prevention and issue resolution leadership ability
  • Polished and professional when dealing with members, prospective members, sponsors, and executive management
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Either live in the following neighborhoods: Clawson, McClymonds, or Hoover Foster or within the larger West Oakland neighborhood
  • High School Degree or equivalent


Physical Demands:

  • Ability to easily move around  West Oakland, including meeting with community partners and residents at various community sites.
  • Ability to pick up materials, food, and other things necessary for organizing meetings and events.
