Youth Program Assistant (K-5th Grade)

East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC) is seeking a regular part-time, 30.0 hours per week, Youth Program Assistant (K-5th Grade) at the Lion Creek Crossings in Oakland, CA.

 

Schedule: generally between 12:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. during OUSD academic school year and approximately 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. during Summer Program.  Schedule is subject to change based on programmatic needs.

 



Summary:

Under the direction of the Youth Programs Site Manager, the Youth Program Assistant will instruct a classroom of up to 25 youth at the Lion’s Pride After School and Summer Program.  The instructor will implement program activities based around a science and cultural enrichment curriculum in tandem with the Oakland Unified School District’s Havenscourt Campuses.  The instructor will also provide support with reading groups, outdoor exercise and recreational games, arts & crafts, field trips, and parent engagement programs. The Lion’s Pride Program primarily occurs at Lion Creek Crossings, a 567 unit affordable housing development in East Oakland.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Coordination

  • Assist with outreach and enrollment of youth participants on an ongoing basis as needed

  • Monitor and log attendance of participants on paper, CitySpan, and in Salesforce database

  • Strategically plan, organize, and implement daily and weekly activities for participants

  • Organize the provision of snacks and other youth curriculum supplies

  • Provide support during field trips, community events, and youth affiliated programs

  • Maintain program environment and equipment for the purpose of ensuring a safe and positive learning environment

  • Report observations and incidents (i.e. discipline, accidents, inappropriate behavior, etc.) to parents, Youth Programs Site Manage and other staff as needed

  • Meet with other Program Coordinators, Counselors, and Youth Programs Site Manager on a daily & weekly basis to discuss progress of participants and other programming issues

  • Co-plan parent engagement events and school collaboration events

 

Children and Parents

  • Implement program plan for participants during after-school and summer programs.  Plan and implement other activities such as sports, reading, arts, and self-development

  • Administer standards of behavior and discipline for the purpose of ensuring safety and well being of participants.  Communicate these standards to both participants and parents.  Positive reinforcement is encouraged, and corporal punishment is strongly prohibited

  • Participate in the “Walking School Bus” daily between the Havenscourt Campus and Lion Creek Crossings

  • Ensure that all participants are picked up by pre-designated person listed on enrollment forms and keep track of children who are allowed to walk home alone

  • Maintain a current, updated parent list with emergency numbers and pick-up information

  • Maintain good relationships and ongoing communication with youth participants, parents and guardians, Havenscourt after school staff, and partner providers

 

Other

  • Be available for other duties, meetings, and trainings as needed

  • Provide child care support and youth activities for Family Resource Center programs on an as-needed basis

 

Requirements Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Minimum of GED or High School Diploma. AA degree or two years of college preferred  

  • Minimum 2 years experience in working with children in grades K-5th in a school or out-of-school program setting

  • CPR and First Aid certification required within 60 days of hire

  • Spanish and/or Yemini Arabic conversational skills preferred

  • Live Scan Background check must be completed within 10 days of hire

  • Ability to work with children and find creative solutions to problems

  • Ability to manage youth behavior in a safe and supportive manner

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

  • Ability to monitor and evaluate program effectiveness and efficiency

  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet-based research and communication

  • Willingness to undertake a flexible work schedule, including attending occasional evening and weekend activities

  • Ability to relate to people of diverse socioeconomic and ethnic/racial backgrounds

 

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to keep up with active children

  • Ability to walk up to 8 blocks per day to accompany children on field trips or to/from local schools
