Dear Friends
April 2020

We are healthier and stronger together

Dear Friends, Since my last communications with you, much has changed. The shelter-at-home order has been extended to May 3. Schools continue to be closed. Congress passed the historic $2.2 trillion COVID-19 aid package (The CARES Act). Governor Gavin Newsom issued state-wide authority for municipalities to place moratoriums on evictions, and the Oakland City Council passed an Ordinance to implement the moratorium. And amidst all of this, hate crimes against Asian Americans due to the COVID-19 pandemic continue to rise. Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) The CARES... Read more

Letter from the Executive Director – Proposed Federal Tax Reform is Bad for Oakland

Update: The recently announced Senate version of the tax bill retains the housing tax credit and tax exempt bonds that are cut by the House.  The House and Senate will negotiate to reconcile differences between the bills. This means that the primary funding for affordable housing is still on the chopping block.  We urge you to  visit The Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California’s website for ongoing updates on this development. Dear Friends and Colleagues of EBALDC, Everyone’s talking about the Republicans’ plans for big changes in the tax code, including huge cuts in... Read more

As an affordable housing organization, this tragedy has been a devastating reminder of why the housing crisis requires new thinking and new solutions. Though this particular disaster fills our hearts and minds, we know that the lack of safe and healthy housing options... Read more

Letter from the Executive Director – Year End Appeal

As 2016 comes to a close, we are aware of the complicated and bittersweet sentiment that hangs in the air. We saw both glimmers of hope and immense sorrow in our communities this year, and 2017 holds immense uncertainty as well. This is not the first time we’ve experienced this. In 1975, the Asian and Pacific Islander communities of Oakland’s Chinatown were coping with the tangible effects of displacement from redevelopment and new freeway construction. The Vietnam War was ending, but the economy was suffering, and unemployment was high. A new... Read more

Letter from the Executive Director – Election Results

Dear EBALDC Family, As the shock of the national election results continues to soak in, many of us are concerned about the future of an America that is equitable and inclusive of us all. At the very least, it has been a reminder about the importance of voting and civic participation on every level. Despite what you may feel at this moment in time, the local election results represent a beacon of hope for the values of equity and inclusion. Oakland and Alameda County as a whole have passed measures to support... Letter from the Executive Director – 2016 Election

Dear Friends and Colleagues of EBALDC, Rarely has an election mattered more. With a wide range of measures on the upcoming ballot, this year’s election is critical. Our neighborhoods, city, state, and country are at a crossroads, and your vote is indispensable in determining the future of the Bay Area. This year’s ballot will be one of the longest many of us have ever seen, but please make the time to read it all the way through!
