EBALDC stands with immigrant communities against the Trump Administration’s latest attack on legal immigrants
Housing stability is a key factor in people’s overall health and wellbeing.
Yesterday (August 14), the Trump Administration released its final changes to the “public charge” rule. These changes will effectively subject millions of immigrants living in this country to the possibility of deportation if they ever used or were deemed likely to use government benefits to help their families meet basic needs, like Medicaid, food stamps, and non-cash housing assistance. The changes will compel many immigrants to give up lifeline assistance that keep their families one step away from homelessness, so they don’t fall under the new definition for “public charge”.
East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation strongly opposes these changes to the public charge rule. Immigrants are at the core of our Bay Area communities in every way. Treating tax-paying, legal immigrants as an undeserving “other” is morally reprehensible and contrary to the inclusive values that define us as a nation. We will continue to fight for our immigrant communities to defeat the Trump administration’s latest affront to dignity, justice and the American dream.
We encourage you to join us in this fight to support families. Encourage lawmakers to support legislation and lawsuits aimed at combating this hateful policy. And to immigrant communities: we join many other organizations, including the One Nation Coalition, around the state and country in saying we stand with you.
