Reimagining Oakland Chinatown Streets: A Safer, Connected Future

This Saturday, November 16th, join EBALDC, City of Oakland DOT, Sticky Rice Club, and Oakland Bloom at the Flow & Flourish: Reimagining Chinatown Streets block party from 3-7pm at 9th and Webster Streets! This event celebrates the Chinatown Complete Streets Plan—a crucial initiative to enhance safety, connectivity, and accessibility for residents, visitors, and businesses in Chinatown.

Why This Matters 

Oakland’s Chinatown is vibrant and culturally rich, but it also faces unique transit challenges. With high rates of pedestrian and bicycle collisions, and one of the city’s most transit-dependent populations, the need for safer, more inclusive streets is clear. This Complete Streets Plan will address these issues by reshaping high-risk corridors with multimodal upgrades to make them safer for all.

Extensive community feedback identified priority corridors including 8th/9th Street, Webster, Harrison, and 10th Street, where improvements like wider sidewalks, pedestrian lighting, and safer crossings will reduce risks and enhance connectivity.

This plan honors Chinatown’s unique needs and community input through workshops, surveys, and a Technical Advisory Committee. EBALDC’s commitment ensures that residents’ voices shape the vision for safer streets.
