Lion Creek Crossings Mobility Hub: A Travel Connection Point!
On a recent sunny Saturday in February, over 100 Lion Creek Crossings (LCC) residents attended a Mobility Fair where they learned about ways to engage more in public transportation options.
LCC in East Oakland is one of three Mobility Hub locations in the Bay Area. Mobility Hubs are community places that bring together public transit, bike share, car share, and other ways for people to get where they want to go. LCC’s Mobility Hub promotes environmentally friendly transportation choices based on resident desires on site. Through our longtime partner, Oakland-based nonprofit TransForm, and funded by a grant from the Community Air Resources Board (CARB), the Mobility Hubs project is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide initiative that puts Cap and Trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthens the economy, and improves public health and the environment, particularly in disadvantaged communities.
What began with a needs assessment of the residents several years ago for the Mobility Hub and driven by a site level team made up of residents and led by EBALDC staff, culminated in a Mobility Fair event at LCC organized by TransForm.
The Bike Mobile provided free repairs for participants who brought their bikes. Attendees received Target gift cards and participated in raffles for prizes, such as gift cards towards purchasing bikes at Big 5 Sports. Free food and bike-blended smoothies rounded out the event. Attendees at the event signed up for free AC Transit passes and credits for Lyft rides.
Lion Creek Crossings (LCC) in East Oakland has long partnered with TransForm, an Oakland nonprofit that promotes walkable communities with transportation choices to connect people of all incomes to opportunity, make California affordable, and help solve our climate crisis, beginning with the Safe Routes to Schools model that informed the creation of LCC’s Walking School Bus.
Our Senior Walking Club has also been supported by TransForm, and TransForm has frequently provided educational events about transportation resources. Outside of its work at LCC, TransForm is also a community partner for EBALDC’s upcoming affordable housing development project at Lake Merritt BART. Thanks to Sheila Islam of TransForm for the photos of the February event!
