Mickey’s Story: From Laney College to Financial Wellness

I was recently laid off due to COVID-19, which has made me doubly grateful that I happened to stumble across the Sparkpointprogram through one of my classes at Laney College. Prior to participating in SparkPoint Oakland, I knew that financial coaching programs existed. However, I never knew how to find them, or whether or not I would qualify or be able to afford them, and I never thought they would be as extensive as the help I’ve received through SparkPoint Oakland. I initially thought the SparkPoint Oakland matched savings account program,... Read more

Our Vision of Leadership

Dear Friends, How do we build a deep bench for leadership collaborative leadership? As the pandemic forces us to re-think everything we do and how we do it, leadership at all levels becomes even more important. Over a year ago, EBALDC started thinking about an organizational restructure plan that would offer more opportunities for growth and leadership for our talented staff. The plan is designed to support strong, collaborative decision-making that’s fully oriented around our vision for Healthy Neighborhoods and the four pillars and five goals of our strategic plan. Through... Read more

Let’s Share Life

Dear Friends, As we travel together through this challenging time of sheltering in place, our network of community partners has been critical to finding ways to address the fast-changing problems that impact the neighborhoods that we serve.  A Tongan proverb refers to the importance of sharing resources, exhorting us to: Pikipiki hama, kae vaevae manava — let’s join our outriggers and share life. Since EBALDC was established 45 years ago, we have accomplished more by bringing people, organizations and resources together. Our partnerships and collaborative partners are more important than ever. Together,... Read more

Appreciation to our frontline staff!

Dear Friends, As we near the end of our 4th week of Sheltering-in-Place in the Bay Area, I want to take a moment to shout-out to EBALDC’s essential workers.  Our on-site Property Management teams, and Resident, Youth and Financial Services teams, are on the front lines, and even more essential during these challenging times.   With 30 properties, our Property Management team has been hard at work to ensure that our residents live in a healthy and supportive environment: Two properties have 24-hour front desk clerks.  They have been critical to supporting... We are healthier and stronger together

Dear Friends, Since my last communications with you, much has changed. The shelter-at-home order has been extended to May 3. Schools continue to be closed. Congress passed the historic $2.2 trillion COVID-19 aid package (The CARES Act). Governor Gavin Newsom issued state-wide authority for municipalities to place moratoriums on evictions, and the Oakland City Council passed an Ordinance to implement the moratorium. And amidst all of this, hate crimes against Asian Americans due to the COVID-19 pandemic continue to rise. Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) The CARES... Read more

EBALDC Statement on Discrimination and Hate Crimes

The East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC) works with and for all the diverse populations of the East Bay to build healthy, vibrant and safe neighborhoods through community development.  We are disturbed by reports of discrimination and hate crimes towards Asian and Asian American populations in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. As we have consistently stated to the communities we serve, there is no racial, ethnic, or cultural basis for the disease. Xenophobia has no place in this important work. Indeed, xenophobia only inhibits our ability to ensure our... Read more

Preserving Oakland as the Vibrant, Diverse, Inclusive City it is Today Through Our Housing Acquisition Fund

“Our long-term vision is for an Oakland that works for everyone, particularly the residents that have made it the vibrant, diverse, inclusive city it is today.” – Joshua Simon, CEO of East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC).  Achieving this vision for Oakland will require all of us to think differently about how to tackle the affordable housing crisis we’re facing. That’s why in 2015, EBALDC launched the Housing Acquisition Fund — an innovative and replicable new model for preserving and expanding quality affordable housing in Oakland.  We are excited to...
