In 1975, community leaders, students, and activists mobilized around the goal of transforming a warehouse in Oakland’s Chinatown into a home for grassroots nonprofits serving that community. This effort led to the creation of the Asian Resource Center (ARC), which housed nonprofits, community-serving businesses, and medical facilities. As the ARC came together, Oakland’s redevelopment efforts, freeway and BART construction, resulted in over 10,000 affordable apartments being demolished. Activated by this displacement, this group responded by expanding their goals to the development of mixed-use affordable housing and adaptive reuse of historic structures. This effectively cemented the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC).
