Bernard Tyson, a visionary partner through volatile times

November 2019

On behalf of the entire EBALDC family, we express our utmost sadness at the passing of Bernard Tyson, Chairman and CEO of Kaiser Permanente.  EBALDC was fortunate to collaborate with Mr. Tyson and Kaiser in a myriad of ways, wherein he consistently showed himself to be the rare leader who not only addressed immediate problems, but also pursued new and visionary ways to address the inequities that are at the root of poor community health.   With Mr. Tyson at the helm, Kaiser’s Total Health strategy – which aligned perfectly with our Healthy Neighborhoods approach – has been a game changer for our work. Kaiser’s support recently led to EBALDC’s purchase and stabilization of an apartment building in East Oakland that was at risk of displacing yet more Oakland residents.  We have been proud to partner with Kaiser and Enterprise in this work through the Bay Area Housing for Health Fund.

Under Mr. Tyson’s leadership, EBALDC has seen Kaiser’s immense impact on community health, which was often beyond hospital walls.  Whether it was through the preservation of affordable housing, supporting our collective impact work in underserved neighborhoods of Oakland, or community based financial counseling programs, Kaiser has steadfastly been there.

Though we will miss Mr. Tyson immensely, EBALDC vows to continue the legacy he leaves behind: one of perseverance, equity, creativity, and community.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Tyson’s family and colleagues during this very difficult time.
