Community Foods Market finally breaks ground in West Oakland

From San Francisco Chronicle
Construction on West Oakland’s long-anticipated People’s Community Market is finally underway, following years of starts and stops. Just as notable, there’s a new name: Community Foods Market. Brahm Ahmadi has been working to bring the project to fruition for well over a decade. In 2016, working with the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation, Ahmadi was able to close escrow on the West Oakland property, located at Myrtle Street and San Pablo Avenue. Last weekend, the groundbreaking finally happened. Now, Ahmadi says things should move swiftly — the plan is to open in... View article

Buying in an emerging neighborhood has long been a strategy for coping with high home prices, not to mention eventually making a tidy sum off the investment. The trick is making the right call, so you can find the right place and enjoy the area as it improves, without ending up stuck in... View article

EBALDC Responds to HUD Statement

Earlier this month, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released a statement announcing that the department’s mission statement would be altered “in an effort to align HUD’s mission with the Secretary’s priorities and that of the Administration.” The new mission statement notably removes anti-discrimination language, including “strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all” and “inclusive and sustainable communities free from discrimination.” As a non-profit community development corporation dedicated to serving all people of the East Bay, we object to this shift in language and rhetoric.  It... Approaching Partnerships Between Health Care Institutions and Community Development Organizations

The shift has been unmistakable: health care organizations are increasingly focusing on upstream factors that affect their patients’ health. To some degree, that shift is the result of state and federal legislation, particularly the Affordable Care Act, which regulates nonprofit hospitals’ preventive care activities. But it’s also just common sense. Addressing patients’ big-picture realities—that is, the social determinants of health like housing, job creation, and food security—can have deep impacts on their day-to-day health and the interventions that are needed.... EBALDC’s Winter Newsletter is Here!

From EBALDC
Welcome to EBALDC’s New Quarterly Newsletter! A Note from EBALDC’s Leadership Between 2010 and 2016, the Bay Area added 500,000 jobs, but only 50,000 housing units.  With a large influx of people moving to the region, hundreds of thousands of people were priced out of the region and thousands became homeless. This displacement of long-time residents is being repeated in cities all over the country, as people who once chose the suburbs are now choosing cities. In the Bay Area, we do not have the capacity to build fast enough to keep up with increased... View article

Opinion: Rebuilding Oakland community includes teaching parents

Recently, 25 parents gathered at Futures and CUES Elementary School at the Havenscourt-Lockwood campus in East Oakland for a special graduation. Instead of kids, the graduates were parents who completed an eight-week program designed to help them support the academic success of their children as they get ready to enter kindergarten. The graduation was the culmination of this year’s Havenscourt Parent University, just one example of how the Healthy Havenscourt Collaborative unites residents, community- and faith-based organizations, government and others in the work of building a stronger and healthier neighborhood. Launched... Read more
