Congratulations to Sherry Hirota!
On Thursday, October 25th, the City of Oakland recognized Sherry Hirota’s legacy in community service with a Commemorative Street Renaming of Alice Street between 9th and 10th in Chinatown as Sherry Hirota Way!
In his remarks, Ener Chiu, EVP of Community Building stated that Sherry, the long-serving CEO of Asian Health Services (AHS), is “a visionary leader, a strategic thinker, and an organizer. Her approach has always been about building coalitions, and a clear understanding that a person’s ability to thrive and be healthy is not driven by health care systems alone. It is about the neighborhood and community around the individual; it’s about their feeling of connection to others, agency within their own lives, access to nutritious food, affordable housing, and safety.” On a personal level, Ener stated, “I have appreciated and benefited from Sherry’s commitment to and investment in raising up and mentoring young people, and the next generations of community leaders in health care and community development.”
Congratulations, Sherry! We are so thankful and inspired by your leadership!
