EBALDC CEO Message on Supreme Court Rulings
In response to the Supreme Court rulings this week, Andy Madeira, CEO of the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation, released this statement:
“U.S. Supreme Court’s decision today in Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Center overturned our constitutional right to abortion medical services. In doing so, SCOTUS made the radical decision to overturn fifty years of repeatedly affirmed precedent recognizing personal privacy rights. Justice Thomas makes clear that access to contraception and same sex-marriage are also in danger. Earlier this week, SCOTUS also overturned a New York state law controlling gun possession outside the home.
“This is a travesty. The East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation has for 47 years served communities negatively impacted by disinvestment and structural racism. Black, Brown, and Indigenous women already have barriers to health care and suffer higher rates of maternal mortality. California has abortion access legal protections, and our state legislature will do more. But Dobbs means our communities nationally will suffer.
“EBALDC is focused on directly improving the health outcomes in the neighborhoods we serve, in collaboration with our partners. But Dobbs shows us we must as a community also support our partners in making systemic change.”
