San Pablo Hotel Anchor

Sponsor Spotlight:

Swinerton’s 921 Howard site

We are pleased to highlight Swinerton, who has come in as a San Pablo Anchor Sponsor.

Established in 1888 in Los Angeles, incorporated in San Francisco in 1908, and headquartered there, Swinerton has 19 offices in 9 states and is 100% employee-owned. With its rich history in San Francisco as the builder of the renowned Fairmont Hotel and Ghirardelli Square, Swinerton’s diverse portfolio (including office, retail, multi-family residential, hospitality, healthcare, energy, education, and entertainment) has evolved over the years to include affordable housing projects. Its most recent affordable housing project, 921 Howard, is a site that, beginning in summer 2023, will provide 203 affordable homes for people with low to moderate incomes in San Francisco (75-120% AMI). 18 stories tall with a square footage of approximately 205,000, 921 Howard is one of the largest affordable housing projects San Francisco has seen in the last 10 years and the largest new construction in Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation’s (TNDC) history. Swinerton boasts projects on both sides of the Bay, both coasts, the Midwest, and the South.

Comments Capri Roth, EBALDC’s Executive Vice President of Real Estate Development, “Swinerton and EBALDC share a commitment to Oakland and the Greater Bay Area. Being 100% employee-owned adds to what makes Swinerton special.”

Below is a Q & A with Patrick Otellini, National Affordable Housing Director for Swinerton. Answers may have been modified for brevity:

What brought you into the EBALDC Family?
Swinerton and EBALDC share common values and are both committed to doing our part to increase the supply of affordable housing in the Bay Area. Our team enjoys working with the EBALDC team and we see them as an inspiration to continue this important work.

What about EBALDC’s work most excites you?
We are excited to see the implementation of programs that increase the density of affordable housing projects. We believe this is one of the most powerful tools to combat the housing crisis, especially in Oakland and the surrounding communities.

How does your company’s vision align with EBALDC’s vision of an “East Bay where everyone has a place to call home and the resources to thrive”?
Swinerton has been building housing in the East Bay for more than 100 years. Oakland and the East Bay are home to a large portion of our employees and workforce, so this is personal for us.

How does EBALDC’s work relate to your work and the transformation you’d like to see in the world?
We believe housing is a human right. Every person should have the benefit of a roof over their heads and a safe place to call home. We share EBALDC’s passion and vision to make this goal a reality.
