45 Stories for 45 Years

Contributor: Marian Dorsey Williams, Former EBALDC tenant

In 2008, my home in Lancaster foreclosed. I was homeless living in a hotel in Downtown Berkeley when I submitted an application to be chosen for residency at Jack London Gateway Senior Apartments, an EBALDC building in West Oakland. Fortunately, I was number 5 in the lottery and lived there from 2009 to 2014.

While I was living there, I learned how to enjoy my life again. My health improved, I didn’t go to the hospital as much. I used to have to go all the time because of asthma attacks and arthritis. I also participated in a variety of beautiful and enchanting cultural events. And best of all, I enjoyed being a Desk Clerk at the San Pablo Senior Hotel. I felt like I was growing like a plant in my home there. I’m very impressed with and proud of EBALDC.

As EBALDC marks our 45th anniversary, we will be gathering more stories like this one from our friends, family, community members, partners and more stakeholders that have made our impact possible. We would be honored for you to join us:
