Jenkins was a successful businessman and owner of the nightclub Slim Jenkins Café which was located one block from where the property stands. This nightclub was for many years the premiere nightclub in Oakland hosting eminent icons such as Aretha Franklin, BB King, Dinah Washington and Nat King Cole.
