I worked at EBALDC from 2008-2014. I started as an Assistant Project Manager in the Real Estate Department right after graduate school in urban planning, and later as Project Manager.
At EBALDC, I was exposed to multifaceted areas from producing and preserving affordable homes, to policymaking in creating healthy communities, and connecting community assets and resources for neighborhoods that the portfolio properties were located.
My greatest accomplishment at EBALDC was the renovation of the historic and iconic California Hotel. It was a major decision for the organization to take on and needed to be done thoughtfully. Some of the planning topics include: how did we ensure the deteriorating building was safe to be used as on site temporary relocation? What were the existing tenants and the community’s vision of the future and restoration of the beauty of this hotel?
In addition to typical financing such as Low Income Housing Tax Credits, and funding from the City of Oakland, this project also had Historic Tax Credits and Mental Health Services Act dollars, which was critical to the preservation of the historic elements, and provided supportive housing.
As I drive by the California Hotel over the 980 freeway, I get to proudly share with my kids that was my project.
As EBALDC marks our 45th anniversary, we will be gathering more stories like this one from our friends, family, community members, partners and more stakeholders that have made our impact possible. We would be honored for you to join us:
