EBALDC’s Commitment to Oakland and the East Bay is as Strong as Ever

Oakland, CA – For 48 years, the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC) has been building Healthy Neighborhoods in the East Bay. With deep roots in Oakland, EBALDC grew out of community activism around the displacement threatening Oakland’s Chinatown in the mid-1970s. This experience to ensure those who have made Oakland what it is – a diverse, inclusive, and culturally vibrant city – has served as our North Star as we have grown throughout Oakland and into Emeryville, Richmond, and San Pablo, weathering economic downturns, the pandemic, and leadership changes.

Most recently, we have seen our CEO and COO depart. EBALDC’s Board of Directors appointed former Board Chair Sean Sullivan as the Acting CEO for three months. Sean is bringing in talented support to strengthen our financial position & build upon the incredible growth of support EBALDC has seen from institutional funders & private philanthropists over the last several years.

This weekend, the Board will appoint a search committee for a permanent CEO. EBALDC’s work is too important for us to rush the process. In the end, we know that EBALDC is more than just a few leaders at the top, but is a strong organization at many levels with a committed staff.

Indeed, EBALDC’s staff are personally and professionally committed to EBALDC’s mission and vision to ensure that our over 2000 residents have safe and affordable homes to live in, provide nearly 6000 community members with essential services including one-on-one financial coaching and free tax preparation, support our 114 commercial leaseholders as they weather the pandemic, and steward the development of deeply affordable housing projects across the East Bay.

As much as we believe in our staff, we also trust that with the incredible community-rooted network of partners, service providers, educators, lenders, donors, elected and appointed officials, and public employees who share in our vision of an East Bay where everyone has a place to live and the resources to thrive, we will continue to build on our legacy.

Tonight, at our Lunar New Year Celebration, we will recognize and honor our staff and their great work. Without them, EBALDC would not be the special institution our many supporters know and respect. Please join us in the celebration at 5:30pm tonight at Square Headquarters at Uptown Station 1955 Broadway.
