What Healthy Neighborhoods Means for Oakland and the East Bay

November 2021

At EBALDC, we talk a lot about Healthy Neighborhoods. It serves as our North Star in our vision of an Oakland and East Bay where everyone can live in a safe and affordable home, and that every neighborhood provides opportunities that enable people to live long, healthy lives, regardless of income or ethnic background.

During our 46th Anniversary Gala, EBALDC CEO Andy Madeira and former COO and EVP of Community Building Charise Fong had a lively conversation with Board Member Dave Peters on what Healthy Neighborhoods means for Oakland and the East Bay, especially during the pandemic. You can check it out below:

As discussed in the video, when the pandemic hit 20 months ago, it was our Healthy Neighborhoods approach that empowered EBALDC to immediately pivot and provide the resources most meaningful and beneficial to our residents, commercial tenants, and community members.

This included providing thousands of hours of social services, facilitating the payment of thousands of dollars of Emergency Rental Assistance, and ensuring our commercial tenants stayed in business. At the same time, we continue to build a real estate development pipeline to ensure we have more affordable homes.

2021 was better than 2020. But it wasn’t easy. And 2022 is still uncertain. What is certain is that for many of our neighbors, the recovery will continue to be difficult.

On Giving Tuesday (November 30th), we will officially launch our End-of-Year Campaign. Funds raised will help us more agilely provide the many resources to ensure that all those who wish to live in Oakland and the East Bay are able to. Of course, you don’t have to wait until November 30th or the end of the year. At EBALDC, our work doesn’t stop because of funding cycles. It will only stop when the need stops.
