EBALDC Responds to Public Charge Ruling

January 2020

On Monday, January 27, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in favor of allowing the Trump Administration to enforce its draconian changes to the “public charge” rule. Expanding the definition of a “public charge” will subject millions of legal immigrants living in this country to the possibility of deportation if they ever used, or were deemed likely to use, government benefits to help their families meet basic needs like Medicaid, food stamps, and non-cash housing assistance.

East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation strongly opposes the Supreme Court’s decision to allow officials to implement the revised public charge provision. Immigrant families are American families and are a critical part of healthy and vibrant communities in the East Bay, California and across the U.S. Compelling so many immigrants to give up lifeline assistance is a stain on the inclusive values that define us as a nation.

In the face of this devastating development, we will continue to fight to support ALL families. For more updates and to find out what you can do, follow the One Nation Coalition. To our immigrant friends, family and neighbors around the city, state and country: we stand with you.
