Latest Issue of San Pablo Ave Community Newspaper Released; EBALDC Youth participate in Talking Transition Oakland

October 2023

Hot off the presses, SPARC’s San Pablo Ave Community Newspaper is available now! The third edition of the paper—its longest edition yet—continues to focus on neighborhood news, such as the availability of community resources like Youth Library Workshops and a local food bank, interviews with local elected officials and school principals. The paper remains designed, produced, and reported by residents of the neighborhood.

Copies of the latest newspapers can be found at the California Hotel, 3501 San Pablo Avenue, and at St. Mary’s Center, 950 Brockhurst St. In addition to specific outreach by and to community members, local organizations seeking copies can reach out directly to Raine Robichaud by sending an email to rrobichaud@ebaldc.org.

You can also find the third edition of the paper online https://sparcoakland.org/newspaper, which includes for the first time, some features translated into Chinese and Spanish.

Formed in 2014, the San Pablo Area Revitalization Collaborative (SPARC) is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of over 10,500 residents living along the 1.5-mile stretch of the San Pablo Avenue Corridor in West Oakland. SPARC is a partnership of 25+ residents, organizations, and institutions who are working to take actions that create long-term health benefits for low-to-moderate income and/or long-time residents of West Oakland’s Clawson, Hoover-Foster, and McClymonds neighborhoods. EBALDC’s Neighborhood Collaborations staff provide significant backbone and technical support to the community resident-based SPARC newspaper production team.

EBALDC Youth Participate in

Talking Transition Oakland

Ten youth leaders from EBALDC’s Lion Creek Crossings community in East Oakland joined the Talking

Transition Oakland project, a citywide initiative that gives the microphone to Oaklanders whose voices have long been ignored. The effort, led by Mayor Sheng Thao’s office was powered by Oakland’s next generation, building young Oaklanders’ capacity to grow into roles as future leaders of their city. The project focused on three areas where the city needs the most public support: housing and homelessness, community safety, and economic opportunity. Our Youth collected over 322 surveys canvassing at Lion Creek, The Oakland Coliseum Bart Station, and the MLK library.

Please join us in thanking them in helping make Oakland a better place to live for all!
